a Rafflecopter giveaway

There are just not enough hours in the day. Emailing, shooting, culling, editing, blogging, designing, ordering, packaging, shipping, and that’s just part of it. There just isn’t enough Jean to go around.

You’ve probably heard me mention this before, but there was a time in my photography career that I just couldn’t possibly do one. more. day. No sleep, very little eating, no exercise, no time for my Love and my Babies. I love my job so much, but in order for me to keep loving it, keep my business running smoothly, maintain my sanity, and get my life back, I had to give parts of it away. I needed help.

Enter outsourcing.

Enter freedom, happiness, and extra time. Exit near mental breakdowns, guilt, and stress.

It is no secret that outsourcing is essential for running my business smoothly. I tell my friends, I tell our workshop attendees, I tell anyone who will listen. However, I must disclaim that I am a picky one. If I am going to give up pieces of my business and entrust them to others, they dang well better do an amazing job. That is where one of my favorite companies comes in…Fotofafa. Fotofafa is an image editing and album design company, and I have worked with them for the last few years. I had tried two or three other editing companies in the past, and just felt frustrated and unsatisfied. I decided to try one more time, with a company called Fotofafa, and was instantly hooked. Amazing customer service, great proofing system, and awesome quality of work. As with anything, it took a few weddings for us to get our styles meshed, but now it is as simple as sending my images in, approving them or requesting changes on their proofing system, and getting the images back for me to upload to my clients in a quick turnaround time.

Thanks Fotofafa for helping me get my life back. AND, thanks Fotofafa for offering TEN $50 gift cards to my readers! If you would like to try Fotofafa, enter a comment on why you would like the gift card, and I will randomly choose 10 people to get a $50 gift card off your first order with Fotofafa!jeansmith_fotofafajeansmith_fotofafa2

fotofafa!

March 22, 2012

When it comes to my photography business, my two favorite things are shooting and editing.  I loooooove to edit.  Just not 800 pictures.  I deliver between 500-800 images to my wedding clients and just the THOUGHT of all of the hours I used to spend editing those images makes me slightly ill to my stomach. I found out about Fotofafa, tried them out, and have never looked back. I now edit 25-50 images for my blog, and ship the rest to Fotofafa to work their magic. No longer do I spend hours and hours and hours and hours editing images.

I always tease that I am a “lazy” photographer and want convenience. I absolutely love that Fotofafa sends me a flash drive to send in my images and keeps sending me replacements so I always have one on hand.  But, my very favorite part is that they send me some online edited proofs of my images and I can approve the editing or request changes until I feel like it is a perfect fit for my editing style.

I love to give shout outs to companies or products that not only make my life easier, but offer an amazing service or high quality product.  Huge thanks to Fotofafa for providing that to me.  And a huge thanks to Fotofafa for being one of our rad sponsors for our workshop. If you would like to learn more about our last two workshops of 2012, please visit our workshop website.  You can also view recent workshop images here on my blog.

styling your clients

December 15, 2011

Let’s just put it out there. Clothing/styling can make or break a shoot. Take any environment and put a family in bright, coordinating colors and funky accessories in it, and the image is automatically amazing.  Take a senior with awesome clothing/accesories, along with hair and makeup, and your images look like they are straight out of a fashion magazine.  Or how about a couple with coordinating outfits with just a bit of high fashion or edge  You, and the couple, look like rock stars.

My friends over at Design Aglow just came out with three fabulous Style Guides (High school seniors, Families, and Couples) for photographers to help their clients look their best.   You can present this to clients as simple flat cards, a spiral bound mini guide, or online as a paperless pdf or email.

I am super excited to be a contributor on this project and hope you love it as much as I do.  Design Aglow is also offering a special introductory price…go check it out!

post processing with presets

October 26, 2011

While the business side of things can, well, suck it, I LOOOOOOVE to shoot and I love to edit.  My continuous goal is to create an image correctly straight out of camera and then lightly enhance my images in post production.  Editing my images is like putting the star on top of the Christmas tree…like putting the cherry on top of the banana split…or even putting the Halloween costume on my cute, new puppy.  You take something good (hopefully my images in my case) and then make it just a little better.

However, with editing, I want the beautiful images…I just don’t have tons-o-time to do it.  I am all about simplicity and efficiency…both in my final image as well as the process used to create it.  That process of creation involved about 50% Lightroom and 50% Photoshop…and a WHOLE lot of time needed to do it.

Then came the rumor.  The rumor that my friend, Jodi Friedman from MCP Actions, had created an intensive Lightroom/ACR preset set that was to be released soon.  Ummmmm, YES please.  She is a genius and I knew it was going to be amazing.

I have had the privilege of testing her new Quick Clicks Lightroom and ACR Presets for the last few weeks and I can officially say that my entire editing process has changed.  My time in Photoshop has now been cut in half and that, for me, is priceless as I want to spend the majority of my time editing in Lightroom.  Her set is HUNORMOUS (a real word according to my 4 year old), is set up in an organized workflow sequence (white balance, exposure, color, black and white, and then finishing enhancers), ANDDDD you can layer presets on top of one another without undoing the previous preset (huge if you are a Lightroom user and know what I mean)!

I love to promote businesses and products that I believe in and Jodi has produced something that I more than believe in and use on a daily basis.  Just passing the love along.  Oh, and to make it even better, her presets are on sale for $30 off until October 31st! Hurry…as we all know MCP discounts and sales are crazy rare!!!

Just a few examples below.  The rest of these images from this shoot are coming tomorrow :)

Color version…Cool Sunshine (White Balance), Add 1/3 Stop (slight exposure boost), Bahamas (warm and pop), Rum Raisin (slight pinky tone), Burnt Edges Light (slight vignette), Sharp Attack Light (sharpening), Manual spot removal of spots on sweater and scratch above eye.

Black and White version…Milkshake Glass

Time spent? 2 minutes.  And then, I just batch process the others in this same setting for exact same and instant results.  Without ever leaving Lightroom.  YEEEEEHAWWWW!

2012 workshops!

October 7, 2011

Wow. 2011 has come and is almost gone. I can’t believe it is already time to look forward to 2012! So, with 2012 in mind, let’s talk workshops! To answer the questions we have been receiving…Yes, we will be holding workshops in 2012 (2-3 at the most). Yes, we will be taking the workshops to other states. No, we do not have exact dates yet, but will be announcing workshop dates and locations toward the end of October. And yes, they will be SO VERY awesome!!!

Our September 2011 workshop was, well, just fabulous. We feel so blessed to be working with and teaching such special and creative people! Thank you to our attendees, our staff (Ken Duffy, Brittni Schroeder, Cortnie Steoger, and Laurel Hogge), and of course, our VERY favorite companies that have been so gracious to support us and sponsor our workshops.  You can click on any logo to be taken directly to their websites.

A few images from our September workshop, taken by yours truly…

And…as a special bonus at our workshops, my face will contort into many random expressions for your entertainment…

eden’s bouquet

May 16, 2011

“It’s almost a cruel joke that you don’t have little girls of your own to photograph…as a mother of 3 girls, I LOVE how your images show you’re inner girlyness.”

Just a little comment on my Facebook that made me giggle. Any one who knows me knows it was my destiny to mother all boys. I am perfect for them and they are perfect for me. However, it’s also no secret that I do like to tap into my inner girlyness and am in LOVE with little girls clothing and styling. So, what’s a mother of four boys to do? Photograph other people’s girls of course!!! One of my favorite clothing lines for little girls and boys is Eden’s Bouquet. We were thrilled to have our girl models dressed by them at our workshop last weekend. Whimsical and soft meets urban grunge…LOVE IT!

You can see all of Eden’s Bouquet products HERE.
